Trump Demands Jailing of Windy City Mayor and Illinois Governor as National Guard Deploy in Metropolis

Former President Donald J. Trump on midweek demanded the incarceration of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect ICE agents.

"Chicago's Mayor belongs behind bars for failing to secure ICE Officers!" Trump wrote on his platform Wednesday morning. "Governor Pritzker as well!"

The two leaders identify as the Democratic faction.

These remarks come alongside the arrival of state military troops in the Chicago region under orders from the federal administration, despite vehement protests from state officials including the governor and mayor.

"This marks yet another attempt where Trump has sought to have an African American leader wrongfully arrested," Mayor Johnson stated on that day. "I'm not going anywhere."

Pritzker also replied via social platforms, declaring: "I refuse to yield. Trump is now demanding arrests of democratically chosen representatives checking his power. What's next on the path to full-blown autocracy?"

By Wednesday morning, National Guard troops from Texas had arrived at the Elwood training facility, an army base approximately 80 kilometers from the city, as the administration pushes forward with its hardline urban crime policy and mass deportation efforts.

The president has called Chicago a "dangerous hellhole", despite official statistics indicate significant drops in many offenses, including homicides.

On Wednesday, 200 state guard troops were expected to deploy to the Chicago area, with an additional three hundred state military personnel readying for deployment, according to reports. Officials indicated the troops would avoid police functions but would secure ICE officers and government buildings.

Military personnel wearing uniforms with Texas national guard insignia were observed at the US army reserve center in the town. Trucks labeled "Emergency Disaster Services" delivered portable toilets and other supplies. Trailers were set up in lines. Additional fencing was installed around the compound.

Aviation authorities ordered flight restrictions over the army reserve center for safety concerns until early December.

Federal authorities has intensified deportation operations in Chicago in recent weeks, sparking demonstrations, especially near an processing facility in a Chicago suburb.

Earlier this week, Illinois and Chicago filed a lawsuit targeting the administration, seeking to block the National Guard deployment, urging a federal judge to stop what they call "the president's proclaimed 'War'" on the city and state, calling it "illegal and dangerous".

Legal proceedings on their lawsuit is scheduled for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also issued an directive on that day prohibiting federal immigration agents and others from using municipal facilities as operation bases for deportation efforts.

The governor has accused Trump of using military forces as "staged tools" and "chess pieces".

At a news conference on Tuesday, Pritzker said that Trump is trying to "justify and make acceptable the deployment of armed soldiers under his personal authority."

The historic Posse Comitatus Act limits the army's involvement in civilian law enforcement. Yet, Trump has stated he would be prepared to invoke the Insurrection Act, which permits a commander-in-chief to dispatch active duty military in regions that are unable to put down an uprising or are defying national authority.

After beginning his new administration, Trump has sent or mentioned sending troops to over ten cities, such as major metropolitan areas and West Coast locations like Bay Area and Southern California municipalities, arguing that the military presence is necessary to combat crime and defend ICE officers.

Data shows that serious offenses across the US has decreased in the past few years. In the city, for instance, homicides were down 31% to 278 through late summer, according to law enforcement reports.

New survey data released on that day revealed that most Americans oppose the deployment of troops without an external threat.
